I spent three weeks along the Southern coast and central hills of Sri Lanka. I penned some haiku while traveling through the island nation. Please read them slowly, and enjoy:
sea turtles glide
bright sunbeams shimmer–
gentle ocean breeze
leaves sway together
fishermen return to shore;
clement summer wind
piquant fruits ripen
a silent monkey watches;
intense summer warmth
lingering sunset –
warblers flock through a valley
mother and child pray
nightfall rises
indigo fades into black
stars slowly emerge
verdant leaves
a young goat leaps
the air turns heavy
unforgiving heat:
a lizard does not pursue
the sleeping field mouse
a babbler looks down
perched upon a charcoal wire
barren grasslands stand
a lone tree:
ensconced in rock,
barren branches
the mauve butterfly–
over crimson hibiscus,
casting a shadow
under a palm tree
a mongrel rests with squirrels;
branches suspended
a rooster darts
crunching leaves, ochre specks
grasshoppers exposed
the sun fades
the horizon sharpens–
half-moon appears
morning sun:
coffee and
fresh mangoes.
thick canopy
palm fronds follow midday winds
ten shades of green
a peacock cries
in the rice field;
echoes.
a hound sleeps—
deep caramel swathes
sunlit fur.
crimson hibiscus:
parched petals curl,
exposed veins
rain clouds pass
over silent hills
flickering shadows
a goose arches–
piercing the pond,
a single ripple.
leather pouch opens:
silver flashes trapped,
a heavy gulp
steam rises–
silky crema floats
in clear glass
